Father P. Edward Kenny, Jr.

Father Ed

Father Ed was born in Baltimore, Md., on July 31, 1948. He attended Immaculate Heart of Mary parochial school, Calvert Hall College, and St. Paul Latin School. He graduated Loyola College and received his seminary training at St. Mary's Seminary and University, where he studied from 1970 - 1974. He pursued graduate studies in Sociology at Oxford University in the United Kingdom in 1986, 1990, and 1991.

After his ordination into the priesthood in May of 1974, he was assigned to St. Elizabeth's as the associate pastor. In 1979 he was reassigned to the Church of the Resurrection in Ellicott City. In 1992, he became pastor of All Saints Church and was briefly at Our Lady of the Chesapeake before coming to St. Mary's in 1993.

By 1994, when Father Jack Lombardi became pastor at St. Joseph's Fullerton, Father Ed relied on the assistance of Father Hoat and Deacon Mike. Two years later, an even bigger change occurred when Blessed Sacrament Parish was without a pastor and Father Ed took on that responsibility as well. This arrangement was necessitated by archdiocesan efforts to maintain individual parishes rather than closing them, particularly in Baltimore City with the declining Catholic population.

Since joining St. Mary's, Father Ed has shown parishioners how programs can indeed influence the entire community. The parish has witnessed the results of his involvement in Govans Ecumenical Development Company (GEDCO), particularly the purchase of the Oakland Apartments into Micah House for the homeless, and the planned development of Memorial Stadium site into Stadium Place as a community for senior citizens.

In an interview at the time of his ordination, Father Ed commented that:

...from these [parish] programs [people] can have their faith needs met
and at the same time their faith can be deepened so that your parish
becomes an active agent for change in the whole community.
Indeed, commitment to outreach activities at St. Mary's has fulfilled Father Ed's expectations.
